Still, Recording: Timon Kaiser

"This work is almost a picture. It is a snapshot of a moment in time. It is a plea against brutality and darkness."

(text fragment in the electronics)

When the city of Guernica was bombed in 1937, pictures of its ruins were sent to Adolf Hitler as a birthday present (Attlee, 2022). Pablo Picasso captured the horrendous attack in his painting, which now hangs in the Museo de Reina Sofía in Madrid. When I visited the famous painting, I was shocked by the contrast between the violent display on the canvas and the lightness of the tourists taking selfies in front of it — making heart and thumbs-up gestures, smiling and joking. This multitude of layers, these contrasts and impressions are the base of the work.

The piece was commissioned by Lux Nova Duo and premiered in November 2024 in the Resonanzraum Hamburg during Hamburg Dialogues. It can be performed with and without electronics.

Thanks to Lux Nova Duo for the commission, and to Kelsey Cotton and Elias Bello for the text recordings.

Lux Nova Duo are Lydia Schmidl (accordion) and Jorge Paz Verástegui (guitar).
